Before going into details of how to suppress it, let’s take a look at what motion sickness is all about, its causes as well as prevention and remedy tips.

What is Motion Sickness?
For most people, motion sickness starts with a mild nauseas feeling while traveling by car, bus, boat, train or plane. Mild cases are easy to handle but if left untreated, it can progress to a more severe level where a person will experience sweating and their stomach feeling topsy-turvy. This will eventually lead to non-stop vomiting.

Vomiting will then lead to dehydration which is already the worse case scenario. You will not only feel out of mood, but motion sickness will leave you tired and fatigued due to the lack of sleep and throwing up often as well as malaise from the sore throat from constant vomiting.

What Causes Motion Sickness?
The cause of motion sickness is related to your inner ear. Simple, but true. Experts say that when the inner ear, eyes and other areas of the body that detect motion send conflicting messages to the brain, it triggers motion sickness. These motion detectors of your body tell your brain that your body is moving but other body parts do not sense this motion. Your inner ear, vision and sensory nerves tell you if you are on a moving ship and thus your inner ear detects the sounds of big waves but then, your eyes don’t see this movement. This conflicting signals sent to the brain eventually leads to motion sickness.

Motion Sickness Prevention
The level of severity varies greatly depending on the individuals. For prevention measure against motion sickness, you can get your hands on several over-the-counter drugs and devices before you hit the road. Some of those people that travel often and use certain OTC medication to counter motion sickness have recommended Scopolamine patches which can be worn behind the ear.
If drugs do not really appeal to you, then About Guide to Alternative Medicine Cathy Wong has some homeopathic treatments that can help you with Motion Sickness.

1) Eating before you travel- Well, nobody asked to eat a full 8 course meal but something adequate to fill your stomach. At least if you experience nausea and vomiting, you’d at least be throwing up the food and not just stomach bile which makes matters worst. Also, another tip if you vomit is plugging your nose before throwing up. This will keep the vomit from clogging and hurting your nostrils and keeping the vomit smell away from your nose. This smell can lead to psychosomatic vomiting.

How Can I Remedy Motion Sickness?
If you end up experiencing motion sickness while traveling, the following remedies can help:

1)Look at the beautiful horizon- well, the whole point of it is to focus on a distant point. If you are traveling by car, sit in the front seat. This makes it easier to find a focus point and keep your eyes tuned to the motion of the car. Also, don’t read while traveling. If you can, roll down your window and breath in the fresh air or else stop as often as possible and walk around.

2)Drink loads of liquid- apart form water, drinking club soda can make your stomach feel better. Water and electrolytes can make you feel better. Some of the electrolyte beverages are such as Gatorade so make sure you carry these as well as drink at least 8 ounces of water every now and then.

3)If you are traveling by plan, then getting the scopolamine patches can help you a great deal. Use this for long overseas flights as they are meant for long term use up to at least 3 days. In the plane, it’s hard to find a focal point unless you are seated at the window and you’re traveling by day. At night, it’s definitely useless. So, use the barf bag instead and make sure that you stay hydrated.

4)If you constantly have motion sickness, carrying your own barf bag would be good. You can get really good ones compared to the types that are offered by airlines.
