Nausea and sickness from 3D movies

Since the release of the movie Avatar many cinema goers have reported feelings of sickness, nausea and headaches whilst watching the film.
One film critic described his own experience of watching the film:
“The new technology they’ve been using to eliminate the headaches and sickness conducive to old 3D tech has not been used properly in the action scenes throughout ‘Avatar’. The problem is with cutting in between 3D focal points and perspective – the mind cannot adjust to it without a buffer – thus, ‘Avatar’ is literally vomit inducing.”
The symptoms are the same as what people experience with seasickness, car sickness, simulation sickness and airsickness. This happens when there is a disagreement between the visually perceived movement of the object in view and that of the vestibular system‘s sense of movement.
3D sickness can manifest itself in headaches, dizziness and even vomitting, and the severity of the symptoms vary from one person to another. Those who are prone to carsickness and other motion-related nausea, should expect to suffer from 3D sickness if watching such movies.
